Money, Money, Money X2

I know. I know. I’ve just posted on this. But this “Evil Corporate Greed is Causing Inflation” bullshit going on on Twitter is driving me crazy. How can you be so simple, single minded?

Hey, I’m not a big corporation fan. I worked for one for over thirty years and my thanks was a layoff and a severance that went straight to paying my bills. But the idea that Corporate Greed is the cause of inflation is just so one-celled thinking that I can’t stand keeping quiet about.

So, for a moment, let’s just pretend there is no such thing as the “Evil Corporations.” Heck, let’s just pretend we are back in 1890 and every business is individually owned. All we have are bars, general mercantile stores, and livery stables. You go into your favorite bar and you order a shot of whiskey. You’ve been paying 25 cents for that shot of whiskey for as long as you’ve been coming to that bar. But guess what, today whiskey is 50 cents a shot. Can’t blame it on evil corporations, they don’t exist in our imagined world. Well, it’s just that damned old bar owner trying to get rich. Aren’t we all?

Forget the BS

You know, I go back there every now and then. I mean in my thoughts. I don’t really go back there. I avoid it like the plague (sorry, kind of a tough word to use given the times we are in). We do a lot of online shopping these days, not because of Covid; just because we don’t want to waste our time going in.

If you’ve been following this, you know I spent thirty plus years in retail. My first foray was with the Big K, while in college. They were actually a big company then. The largest discounter. It’s humorous now, maybe a little sad in some ways. They really thought they would squash the Big W before it ever got rolling. I remember my old boss telling me about this little retailer that was coming on strong. Based in Arkansas, they were just getting ready to move into the DFW area. “Yeah, we’re going to roll over them and send them back to the small towns,” he claimed. It didn’t happen of course. The Big W went on to crush the Big K and the rest is history.

They Think Yer Stupid – Maybe You Are

I saw a certain celebrity tweet about the need to raise corporate taxes the other day. It’s amazing how someone who thinks themselves so intelligent that they speak for everyone else is too stupid to understand the simple methods of business. I get it. It’s easy to think that these large corporations and businesses should pay more of the taxes in this country. People want some of their wealth, but there’s truly no real way to collect more in corporate taxes without hurting the very people you claim to help. It’s just a matter of math, or business, whichever you choose. It’s easy to see why an average American could consider raising corporate taxes as the right thing to do, and for a politician, well it’s easy to see that they just see more $$ signs and more money to spend. Realistically, this isn’t necessarily a political argument. There are people on both sides of the aisle who believe that corporate taxes or taxes to business in general should rise.

But simply put, these people who think this is a good idea are either extremely ignorant of the ways of business or they simply use it as a way to rile the masses against the very core of capitalism (much like leading sheep to the slaughter, if you will). Whether we’re talking about corporate business or a Mom and Pop, business is business. You have to stop looking at corporate tax as a way to get more money into the government’s coffers or to even the playing field between Middle Class America and the Rich, and start looking at it as it is — a business expense. Raising taxes on any business, corporate or main street, raises the cost of doing business. Costs of doing business impact profit. Profit is the only reason a business is IN business. If a business is not in business for profit, they aren’t a business; they are a non-profit organization.

Early efforts…

So, a lot has happened since I began this journey. I’m still unemployed. I’ve applied to over 150 positions. Some admittedly with other corporations, but nothing as competitive as my previous employer. I’ve visited kids, went to dr. appointments, refinished furniture, worked on my workshop, mowed an incredible amount of grass (lots of moisture this year), and spent quite a bit of time researching and writing.

As I mentioned, my first response to the layoff was controlled patience. I read different internet blogs about the process and how to deal with it. I forced myself to stay calm and give it time before reacting. I tried to keep the right attitude and not become bitter. The one thing I couldn’t do was go back in the building. For some reason, the idea that I was unemployed, perhaps unsuccessful, or maybe identity-less, wouldn’t let me go back to the one place I’d called home, besides home. It’s been over a year and a half. I haven’t been back.

Childish? Possibly. Vengeful? No
